Kea

Description

The Kea is a large, strong-flying, olive-green parrot with scarlet underwings. They are a protected species that lives in forests and mountainous areas across the South Island from Golden Bay to Fiordland. The endangered Kea is one of the most intelligent birds in the world with an innate curiosity. Kea are attracted to people wherever they enter its mountain domain, and are a feature at South Island ski-fields and mountain huts.
